The dumping of waste in and around the Kathmandu city have not just ruined the periphery but also have augmented the argument about why our concern government is not able to settle it and the problem gets revive again and again. Today everyone is concern about the sustainability of the waste management in major cities like Kathmandu where getting rid of such problem have been troublesome. It is believed that we can only take control of waste only when we can take care of its root cause, if our approach would be directed for its root cause, only then we can take some solid move to bring the problem down. Waste is also considered as a source of income if the case is taken seriously and as per the planning but same waste become burden when we are unable to handle it. Understanding the root cause and trying to take care of it is the main source of solution. The problem is intense, we can see the waste in the city everywhere, due to unplanned and haphazard storing of such waste for long time can lead to tremendous diseases and can be of a great problem in term of pollution and people’s health.
Segregation of waste and its proper disposal is very much needed and much research and implementation needed to be forwarded in order to make this happen. The source segregation helps to understand the nature of waste that is being produced in the area and also helps to fill our pocket with enough data to take proper action. For instance, if some particular area is with intense organic waste, it can be concluded that the area has maximum settlement or such so forwarding the concept about waste conversion within the area through fertilizer converting concept can be of great value. If every individual house commences to act and would convert their organic waste to fertilizers than wonders can happen. Normally, one house produces in and average of 1 to 2.5 kg of organic waste each day and converting those 2.5 kg of organic waste to fertilizer is not a big deal. Small compost bin bucket is enough to do the work and if every house commences to adopt this simple step than it can curtail more than 80% of organic waste in the city which can help the local government tremendously. Around 700 MT of organic waste is producing each day in Kathmandu itself and if this scenario gets curtail by around 80% than the load to settle down such would be accessible and this chaos circumstance can be handled with great efficiency.  For the non-organic waste, the concept of reuse needs to be connected tremendously, if we commence to use the same item again and again than the non-organic waste commence to be in control. These are the simple but very powerful concept to take control of the waste problem in the city. It’s imperative to understand that every public is the responsible police by themselves, if they commence to act than the solution to every problem become feasible. Government needs to activate the young activist and celebrities to enhance its concept and its spectrum.
Now, lets get intact to another important aspect of waste management, Reducing the creation of waste helps to make the settlement more systematic but long-term vision and its strategies are also very important in order to get the permanent solution of the problem. As an engineer, I can imagine four alternatives for the current waste management problem. One is to involve the creator to make its proper settlement in the sources, now from the government aspect, we need to have short term, mid-term and long-term plans and approach to get rid of this problem. Short term is coined in such that the solution need to be there within 24 hours and it’s the case of emergency only, mid-term is such where solution need to be solved within 2-3 month which would be a temporary solution until the permanent solution’s comes into play and long term means the vision which takes more than 1 year and is the permanent solution to the problem, if the local government couldn’t track this approach they would drag themselves in difficult situation. For short term ideas, Waste segregation technique need to be adopted and every house need to adopt the waste segregation bin, with such organic waste need to be dumped in the local areas where we can dig big pit and put those organic waste in the big pit and can be buried Permanently, burying once would make no difference but the process should not be repeated again and again as its only the short term solution, once its done we can at least have control of organic waste for some days. Proper technique needs to be adopted and we can choose many local places to perform the task. In the same way for non-organic waste, proper temporary dumping site need to be identified and encompassed. For the mid-term, identifying of proper dumping place, buffer government organic waste converter to fertilizer converting booth need to be established where fertilizers can be sold once the organic waste is converted and for non-organic waste, recycling process, making of some innovative substances from the booth and using it for governmental and other areas need to be done. Dumping off other non-organic waste need to be identified and need to be dumped. For the long-term vision, involvement of private sector for organic waste conversion, building of own fertilizer conversion plant, Organic waste treatment Plant in different places need to be adopted. Use of Advance Technology to track the data and prompt settlement, use of IOT for advance segregation and management need to be taken care of. For non-organic waste, reuse, recycle process need to be adopted with the aid of private, public and government partnership.

Non organic waste can be further classified and can be used to convert it to different useful materials which can be of great use so proper research of those need to be explored and steps need to be forwarded to make it prompt and efficient. At last the most powerful tool in the world, the proper team and continuous research for enhancement of quality need to be taken care of where we can bring more alternatives to flash light. Right person in the right place is what our country is looking forward for, Vision along with mission and Leadership acting as catalyst to ensure the work is in schedule is what our leadership need to be packed with. It is seen that Mayor of Dharan Harka Sampang’s leadership need to be embraced by the nation and proper planning, public involvement in the process can turn our approach toward sustainability..
